Clem Burke, the dynamic drummer and foundational member of Blondie, passed away on April 7, 2025, at the age of 70 after a private battle with cancer. Born Clement Anthony Bozewski on November 24, 1954, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Burke’s passion for drumming emerged early, leading him to perform with local bands in his youth.

In 1975, Burke joined Blondie shortly after its formation by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. His energetic drumming became a hallmark of the band’s sound, contributing to hits like “Heart of Glass” and “Call Me.” Beyond Blondie, Burke’s versatile talent led him to collaborate with artists such as the Eurythmics, the Ramones (performing briefly as “Elvis Ramone”), Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, and Joan Jett.

Blondie paid tribute to Burke, stating, “Clem was not just a drummer; he was the heartbeat of Blondie. His talent, energy, and passion for music were unmatched, and his contributions to our sound and success are immeasurable.”

Burke’s legacy is enshrined in his 2006 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Blondie. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Burke, whom he married in 2002.
