Joder Juan is a band that brings back a really nice memory for me. I first heard them during one of my very first radio shifts at Substrate, back in January of 2025. I was queuing up my playlist for the evening, and in the moments before my show started, their song “Analisis del Desgaste” played in our station rotation. I had never heard of either the song or the band before, but I found it extremely catchy and pretty much became a Joder Juan fan right then and there.

If you’re unfamiliar, Joder Juan is a four-piece indie-rock band from Madrid, Spain, and they just released their debut full-length album “Caja Sorpresa” this week. The title translates to “Surprise Box,” and while I’m not fluent enough in Spanish to know if that’s a double entendre or not, I love it all the same. It was also released on the same day as the birthday of one of the band members. So we’re off to a great start already.

There’s not a ton of information about the band online (at least, not that I can find). Their primary presence is on Instagram, Spotify and Bandcamp, although the latter is seemingly used for merch and not music. The band’s bio is simply, “Somos Joder Juan y lo seguiremos siendo.” (Which roughly translates to “we are Joder Juan and we will continue to be.”)

Despite the sparse info, there’s a lot to love about this band. For one thing, the name “Joder Juan” is a bit ~spicy, with “joder” being a Spanish expletive that’s similar to “fuck” or “dammit” in English. So hell yeah to that.

Additionally, all of Joder Juan’s songs are in Spanish. And one thing about me: I LOVE listening to songs in other languages. Not only is it just an inherently cool thing to do, but it’s a great way to learn a new language, or freshen up your skills with one. Personally, I speak muy poco Español — I took two years of it in my rural Alabama high school and one semester in college, and I’ve gotten pretty rusty since then. So, I’ve been able to refresh my memory a bit with this record… especially since it’s all I’ve been listening to for the past several days.

This album is SO GOOD, y’all. Every song is melodic and catchy, and there’s really no point at which the album lulls or loses momentum at all. It’s absolute guitar-pop perfection, and while I wouldn’t say it’s particularly groundbreaking, it doesn’t have to be. It’s one of those records where like 90% of the tracks could be singles. It’s that good. From the opening track “Caja Sorpresa” to the closing notes of “Al Otro Lado,” it’s just hook after hook after hook. These songs aren’t long; I think the longest one comes in under three and a half minutes. And for a power-pop fiend like me, that hits the perfect sweet spot.

We start things out with the title track, “Caja Sorpresa,” which is one of the singles that rolled out just a few weeks before the release of the album. It’s a midtempo track that starts the thread of catchiness that weaves throughout the entire record.

Next up is “Títulos Largos Para Canciones Cortas,” another single and midtempo bop which translates to “long titles for short songs.” Again, I don’t speak enough Spanish to know if the lyrics are literally about that, or if it’s just a quippy phrase that has nothing to do with the song, but I love it nonetheless.

Then comes “Gasolineras Con Vistas al Mar” (another great title that translates to “gas stations with ocean views”). This is one of my favorite songs on the whole album, and while it’s surprisingly not one of the singles, it absolutely could have been. It’s one of those melodies that will instantly get stuck in your head. Sorry in advance but also you’re welcome.

“Plumas Y Almohadas” (“feathers and pillows”) quickens the pace even more with barely over two minutes of uptempo melodic-ness in G major. It also incorporates some horns into the mix, but not in like a ska way. More of an “accentuates the musical backdrop” way.

And then comes what is probably my favorite song on the whole album: “El Fantasma de Tu Lado de La Cama.” It’s another one of the singles, and it’s easy to see why. This song is SO. FCKN. CATCHY. I remember listening to it at least 15 times in a row the first time I heard it. The title translates to “the ghost on your side of the bed.” And while the music itself is upbeat and infectious, the lyrics (from what I can translate) seem a bit morose. And honestly, the juxtaposition of it all makes me love this song even more. Anyway, I know it’s kind of lame to say that the hit single is your favorite track on an album. But when a song is this good, how can you not??

“Vale Pichon” (“alright, kiddo”) comes next, and it was actually the very first single released from this album all the way back in September 2025. Then there’s “Duelo de Cosquillas al Sol” (“tickle fight in the sun”), which is both the fastest and the shortest track on the record, clocking in at two minutes even.

And then we close things out with “Al Otro Lado,” an extremely catchy closer with an equally catchy refrain of “para siempre” at the very end. While I don’t know the context of the lyrics (other than the title translating to “on the other side”), I like to think the “para siempre” ties in with the previously mentioned band bio. “We are Joder Juan and we will continue to be. Forever.”

Actually, technically there’s one other track on the album, “Tomas Falsas.” But rather than an actual song, it’s quite literally “outtakes” of what I assume to be one of their recording sessions or band practices. You can hear the band members conversing with one another and playing instruments, singing lyric snippets, etc. It’s really cool and it makes you feel like you’re sitting in the same room hanging out with them.

All in all, I really can’t say enough good things about this album. It’s full of bops, bangers and 1-2-3 repeaters, and there hasn’t been a single day this entire week where I haven’t listened to it multiple times. I know we just ended Q1 of this year, but I can already tell that “Caja Sorpresa” is going on my Albums of the Year list. Mark my words!

(Also, I think this is my sign to pick back up on my Spanish lessons. I need to be able to sing along if they ever go on tour here in the States. And if you see this, Joder Juan… please play here sometime soon! Lo agradecería mucho.)
