Michael Hurley, the revered folk singer-songwriter and visual artist, passed away on April 1, 2025, at his home in Astoria, Oregon, at the age of 83. Known affectionately as “Snock,” Hurley was a pivotal figure in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene and was often hailed as the “Godfather of freak folk.”
Born on December 20, 1941, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Hurley began crafting music and art from a young age. His debut album, First Songs, was recorded in 1963 and released on the Folkways label, placing him alongside folk luminaries like Woody Guthrie. Throughout his six-decade career, Hurley developed a distinctive style that blended elements of bluegrass, blues, and folk, characterized by playful, surreal themes interwoven with profound reflections on life.
Hurley’s influence extended far beyond his own recordings. He inspired a diverse array of artists across generations. Indie rock band Yo La Tengo covered his song “Griselda” on their 1990 album Fakebook, bringing his music to a broader audience. Similarly, singer-songwriter Cat Power (Chan Marshall) covered his songs “The Werewolf” and “Sweedeedee,” showcasing Hurley’s enduring impact on contemporary musicians.
In addition to his musical contributions, Hurley was also a talented visual artist, creating much of his own album artwork and producing comic books featuring his whimsical characters. His final album, The Time of the Foxgloves, was released in 2021, and he remained actively performing until days before his passing.
Michael Hurley’s legacy is one of authentic artistry and profound influence, leaving an indelible mark on the folk music landscape and inspiring countless musicians who followed in his path.
