Winter aka Samira Winter’s sophomore release, What Kind of Blue Are You?, on Bar None Records could have been released in 1991. And I mean that in the best way. This 10 song LP is dream-pop at its finest. Checks all the prerequisites: swirly guitar drone (check), lots of reverb (check), whispery, breathy vocals a la Elizabeth Frazer of the Cocteau Twins or Rebecca Gates of The Spinanes (triple check). I hear some Kim Gordon in there, too. These songs possess a bleached out quality like you can only listen to it while wearing the darkest of sunglasses on a cold, sunny day. Stand out track, “Atonement”, features Austrailan singer songwriter, Hatchie and “Write it Out” is a slow burn that name drops Walgreens drug stores.
