Gareth’s Picks

Helvetica (2007)

The documentary you didn’t think was needed but is an absolutely fascinating history of the font and the world of typeface art.  Learn why you are so affected by the fonts in your life.

Available on Kanopy

Detour (1945)

One of the all time best film noirs ever made.  Edgar Ulmer had a tiny budget but makes the absolute best use of it as he showcases all the coolest tropes of the genre (if you consider it a genre, and that is okay too.)

Available on Kanopy

Craig’s Picks

Modern Girls (1986)

Guy wants to date totally radical girl and they have adventures through 1986 LA club scene. Music by Depeche Mode, Icehouse and Jesus and Mary Chain. There’s a “getting ready to go out” montage worth the entire movie. It’s an actual 80s movie, not someone’s idea of what the 80s were like. Also please get off my lawn.

Available to stream for free on Tubi and PlutoTV

World of Tomorrow (2015-2020)

One of the best experimental, beautiful and unsettling animated short film series of all time from Don Hertzfelt.

The series began with World of Tomorrow (2015), which was followed by World of Tomorrow Episode Two: The Burden of Other People’s Thoughts (2017) and World of Tomorrow Episode Three: The Absent Destinations of David Prime (2020)

It’s about Emily and Emily Prime and  Emily 9 and David Prime…you just have to watch it.

The first episode is available for free on Hertzfelt’s YouTube channel and all three are available with a YouTube subscription.
