RECOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE GOUGE AWAY, A.R.KANE, DEFTONES, MODERN SHOEGAZE
When you press play on “I’ll Drown On This Earth” by Cold Gawd, you’re immediately submerged in a world that feels as heavy and as suffocating as an ocean full of water pressing down on your chest. It’s an experience, a collision of shoegaze’s ethereal layers with the crushing weight of something darker and more brutal, yet there’s a beauty that slowly unfurls as you let the record wash over you.
Even though the album can feel oppressive, with its layers of dense guitars and vocals that seem to be fighting to break through the noise, there’s an undeniable beauty that begins to emerge as you move deeper into the record. It’s as if the band is guiding you through a tunnel, and with each step, the light at the end becomes a little clearer. The songs, while steeped in a sense of despair and heaviness, also carry with them moments of unexpected grace. These flashes of beauty aren’t just there to offer relief; they’re integral to the album’s impact, showing that even in the darkest moments, there’s something worth holding onto.
From the first scream in the opening track, you’re thrust into Cold Gawd’s tumultuous soundscape. It’s more of a declaration than just another shoegaze record. It’s something more intense, more urgent. “Gorgeous” sets the tone of the journey you’re about to undertake. The beauty of Cold Gawd’s approach lies in the way they juxtapose the delicate with the devastating. There’s an artful tension between the droning guitars that seem to stretch out into infinity and the pummeling force of the rhythms that anchor you to the earth.
As the album closes with with two almost perfect tracks ‘Nudism’ a soundscape collage of sound and feel and ‘Bird in Space’ a perfect ending in the vein of the ghosts from shoegaze past -you hate to see it go, and almost mourn the loss. Thank goodness you can just hit PLAY again! Catch Cold Gawd out on the road with other modern gaze bands such as Gouge Away, Glixen etc. We can only hope they combine into one giant space robot and roll through a city near us soon!
