Dave Allen, the founding bassist of the influential British post-punk band Gang of Four, passed away on April 5, 2025, at the age of 69. Born on December 23, 1955, in Kendal, England, Allen co-founded Gang of Four in 1976. His distinctive bass lines were integral to the band’s politically charged and angular sound, notably on their acclaimed 1979 debut album, Entertainment!, which is recognized as a post-punk classic. After departing the band in 1981, Allen co-founded Shriekback and later contributed to various musical projects, including The Elastic Purejoy and Low Pop Suicide. Beyond performing, he held positions at Intel and Apple Music, influencing the intersection of music and technology. Allen had been living with early-onset mixed dementia in recent years. He is survived by his wife, Paddy, and their children.
