Mo Troper, an established figure in the power pop genre, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Maya Stoner, the frontwoman of Floating Room. The lawsuit arises from Stoner’s allegations of abuse, which have sparked intense debate and concern throughout the local music community.
In a press release, Troper firmly denies the accusations, describing them as “false, defamatory, and permanently damaging.” According to Troper, the allegations, which began to surface in March 2024 and intensified in May, have caused significant personal and professional harm. “Since March, Defendant Stoner’s rhetorical attacks and harassment against me, my family, and friends have been relentless,” Troper states, noting that these actions have led to a damaging rift within the community.
Stoner’s allegations encompass claims of sexual, physical, financial, and psychological abuse. These serious accusations have led to Troper being publicly branded as a violent domestic abuser, a label he vehemently contests. The lawsuit includes claims for defamation, interference with business relationships, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and invasion of privacy. Troper seeks injunctive relief, $200,000 in noneconomic damages, and $75,000 in economic damages. However, Troper emphasizes that his main goal is to end the harassment.
“Attempts to resolve this matter without litigation, using trauma-informed measures, have gone unheeded by Stoner,” Troper explains. “Attempts by mutual friends to have mediated conversations with Stoner have failed. A cease-and-desist letter sent to Stoner by Ashley Vaughn, my counsel, to engage in a mediation facilitated by a mutually agreed-upon, trauma-informed mediator, went unanswered and unheeded.”
The indie music community, known for its solidarity and support of marginalized voices, now faces a challenging dilemma. While it’s essential to listen to and support survivors of abuse, it is also crucial to ensure that accusations are addressed fairly and responsibly. The allegations against Troper have undoubtedly stirred a broader conversation about abuse, accountability, and the community’s role in navigating such issues.
Stoner has not yet issued a formal response to the lawsuit. Her allegations, however, have already brought attention to the often overlooked and underreported issues of abuse within the music industry. This case underscores the importance of creating safe spaces for survivors to share their stories while also maintaining a commitment to justice and due process.
As the legal proceedings move forward, the community remains watchful and concerned. The hope is that the truth will emerge through a fair and thorough examination, allowing for healing and reconciliation. This situation serves as a stark reminder of the complexities involved in addressing allegations of abuse and the need for careful, compassionate, and balanced approaches.
In a scene that prides itself on inclusivity and progressive values, the Troper-Stoner case is a poignant example of the ongoing struggle to uphold these ideals in the face of deeply personal and contentious disputes. The path to resolution is fraught with challenges, but the commitment to truth and justice must remain steadfast for the benefit of all involved.
