Gareth’s Picks

Women in Retirement (1941)

Unusual film noir from 1941 starring the always watchable Ida Lupino as a housekeeper/companion to a rich woman in Victorian England who must make some difficult decisions when she is forced to take care of her two challenging sisters played by wondrous duo of Edith Barnett (former wife of Vincent Price) and Elsa Lanchester (the Bride of Frankenstein herself)

Available to stream on Tubi

Titicut Follies ( 1967)

Fredrick Wiseman’s vital 1967 documentary about a prison mental hospital that was banned by Massachusetts for over 20 years for not getting the permission of the subjects for filming.  This is an ethical question but it was more likely banned because it exposed the horrific conditions of the hospital.  Still incredibly important and disturbing.

Available to stream on Kanopy

Craig’s Picks

Shut up and Play the Hits (2012)

Music doc following James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem around as a build up and come down from a “farewell” show at Madison Square Garden. The live footage captures the bands live energy that made them so goddam good. Murphy is pretentious and aloof but he’s funny too. Dance Yrself Clean with this one.

Trust (1990)

American Indie Film 101. Hal Hartley directs Adrienne Shelly and Martin Donovan in this small but moving story of a pregnant teenager. Edie Falco knocks it out of the park as usual.

Part of Long Island Trilogy (with The Unbelievable Truth and Simple Men).
