Gareth’s Picks

Another Round (2020)

We talked about this film a few years ago on the show, but it is worth repeating what a fantastic film it is.  Dogme 95 co-creator Thomas Vinterberg returns to magnificent form along with old friend Mads Mikkelson to tell the story of a group of friends who try to test the theory that they will be happier if they maintain a constant level of drunkenness.  This film goes to much deeper levels and is pure delight to experience.

The Guilty (2019)

This is the original Danish film.  Not the remake from 2021 with Jake Gyllanhal and directed by Antoine Fuqua.  This is an amazingly tight, psychological thriller about a 911 phone operator getting a call from a possible kidnapper.  Almost the entire film is just a series of conversations between the operator played by Jakob Cedregen, and the kidnapper. A great plot for a low budget, this Hitchcockian device works very effectively under the direction of Gustav Moller.

Wild Tales (2014)

I love a good film with short stories baked in. This Argentinian/Spanish production by director Damián Szifron riffs on the theme of revenge with six short segments. Given the small amount of time allowed for each story, they all hit the ground running and it’s a thrilling watch.

Available to stream on Hulu

Cat’s Eye (1985)

Another anthology film, Cat’s Eye was another entry into this type of structure that was all the rage in the 80s (Twilight Zone, The Movie, Tales from the Crypt). This is a triptych of stories that revolve around a stray cat (hence the title). Starring Drew Barrymore, Robert Hays, James Woods and Candy Clark. I loved this as a kid. There is also a little evil gnome if that tells you anything.

Available on Apple TV or to rent on all the streaming platforms
