Submarine (2010)
One of my favorite comedians is Richard Ayoade and here is his directorial debut. Definitely inspired by The Graduate and a fair amount of Wes Anderson, this coming of age/love story, it also has his dark sense of humor. Craig Roberts plays the young man, but his parents played by Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine give this film the extra level of emotion.

Running Scared (1986)
Watching the new Beverly Hills Cop movie on Netflix (it’s not bad!) made me think of all the 80s action/comedy movies it spawned. Most of them are watchable with few really reaching the same level. This one is pretty good just because it’s got heavy hitters like Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as leads. They play Chicago cops coming back from vacation having to track down a drug dealer who almost killed them earlier in their career. I mean it’s the chemistry that is watchable, not the plot. Also the banging soundtrack featuring Michael McDonald’s Sweet Freedom.

Red Heat (1988)
Let’s not stop there…now we are back in Chicago but this time it’s Arnold playing a Russian policeman forced to team up with a cocky police detective to apprehend a Russian drug lord who fled to the US. I mean…it’s when Jim Belushi was considered a movie star and an heir to his brothers name…it didn’t last.
