Gareth’s Picks

Four Lions (2010)

Before Riz Ahmed and Kayvan Novak were who they are today, they starred in this satire about wannabe terrorists in England.  It takes a deeply disturbing world and somehow finds humor.  The acting is top-notch and the dark humor will make you laugh-cry. Actor/Director/Writer Christopher Morris does a great job balancing this topic.

Bug (2006)

Directed by the one and only William Friedkin (RIP) this masterful horror chamber piece stars Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon, each delivering a brilliant performance.   This one will definitely get under your skin, literally and figuratively.  It is based on a play by the mighty Tracy Letts who also writes the screenplay.  It is a great example of adapting a play and still feeling like a film.

Craig’s Picks

A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969)

Good grief, Peanuts first feature length film. written by Charles Schultz and directed by Bill Melendez with a score by Vince Guaraldi. There are also songs by Rod McKuen. It’s late 60s animation at its finest, you blockhead.

Available to rent on the platforms

A Monster in Paris (2011)

Animated take on the Hunchback of Notre Dame that isn’t Disney with songs by Sean Lennon. The monster is a giant flea if that gives you any indication of where this goes. The animation and the songs are beautiful.

Available on all the free streaming platforms.
