Gareth’s Picks

Lake Mungo (2008)

This film often makes the scariest films of all time lists and rightly so.  Filmed like a documentary, it investigates the death of a young woman in Australia.  Slowly, things are revealed and the general ambiance of the film will fill you with dread and despair.  Definitely one that will make you think as well.

Living in Oblivion (1995)

We just talked about this on the show as a great example of the behind the scenes meta film.  In this case, Tom DeCillo followed up his first film Johnny Suede with this film about the making of that film.  From a vain, difficult actor to the demands of the producers, this film captures the manic nature of filmmaking whilst also delivering many a chuckle.  Steve Buscemi is excellent as the beleaguered director.

Ghosthouse (1988)

Sometimes you know eating an entire bag of Doritos is bad for you and you hear that voice in your head say “that’s enough now, if you keep eating these you will feel awful both physically and mentally – put the bag away…seriously why are you doing this, you aren’t even hungry…”

It’s kind of like that watching this movie. The effects are bad, the acting is horrible but you can’t stop watching. The ghost of a murderous girl and her demonic clown doll torment a couple in a house…a ghosthouse if you will.

Horror Planet/Insemnoid  (1981)

Have another bag – these are Cool Ranch.

So this movie is either called Horror Planet or Inseminoid. I bet this was a marketing decision. Like it matters. It’s an Alien rip-off,  but the aliens in this one look like walking scrotum which I can’t help thinking this is intentional. It’s not a comedy.
