The House of the Devil (2009)

Long before the X trilogy, Ti West made this 80’s throwback horror film starring a young, up and coming actor named Greta Gerwig. She is not even the lead in this. That is Jocelin Donahue, who does a great job as the young woman who is pulled into a world of terror when she responds to a babysitter ad.  The film is made extra creepy with the imminent presence of Tom Noonan and Mary Waranov.  They lend their considerable force to the atmosphere of the film.

The Old Dark House (1932)

James Whale followed up the success of FRANKENSTEIN with this masterpiece of gothic cinema. Boris Karloff is back for more fun along with Charles Laughton, Melvyn Douglas (Macon, Georgia’s pride) and Gloria Stuart (yes, that Gloria, who threw away the necklace in TITANIC).  It is the perfect blend of humor and horror as five travelers find themselves stuck in a mansion due to a torrential rain storm.  It failed to garner the success of his earlier work, but Whale loved this film and so do I. Did I mention it is set in Wales between WWI and WWII?

Dolls (1987)

A precocious girl, her nasty parents, two punk-rock losers and a weak-kneed salesman inadvertently become the guests of two ghoulish senior citizens in their dark, haunted mansion. It’s like Rocky Horror and Chucky and Cocoon. Or something.

Don’t Go in the House (1979)

As a child, Donald was tormented by his mother who used fire as a punishment. Now a deranged adult, Donald stalks women at clubs, then takes them home where he kills them with a flamethrower. He’s got mommy issues and it’s gross and weird.
