McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971)

We just talked about NASHVILLE on the show, so now is a good time to watch another great film by Robert Altman.  A western that tries not to be a western, it stars Warren Beatty and Julie Christie as the titular couple, a gambler and a madam trying to survive in a mining town in the Pacific Northwest.  They built the town as they were making the film and it captures the energy and madness of that era perfectly.  The music by Leonard Cohen is also perfect.  Like all Altman films, there are so many characters and tremendous acting performances that enable multiple viewing that always invite new discoveries.

Logan’s Run (1976)

I was fascinated by this film as a child, and need to rewatch it.  It also terrified me, but I loved Peter Ustinov’s performance.  It tells the story of a dystopian future where people are eliminated at the age of 30.  Michael York (our seventies hero) is a cop who is fine with the system until his turn comes up.  It also stars Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, and Roscoe Lee Browne.  Wait, I almost forgot to mention Farrah Fawcett is in this.  You’re welcome.

The Swimmer (1968)

During a blazing summer day in waspy Connecticut, Neddy Merrill (a tanned, toned Burt Lancaster) decides to swim all his wealthy neighbors’ pools on his way back to his house. It’s got Slim Aaron photography vibes.

Riders of Justice (2020)

This Danish film by Anders Thomas Jensen, starring Mads Mikkelsen is an exploration of the algorithm of chance and how small decisions have a huge impact on reality. It’s also about grief and resignation to the idea that bad things just happen. It’s also weirdly funny.
