Gareth’s Picks

The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

Ring in the new year with this classic slice of 70’s disaster films.  Amazing cast led by the one and only Gene Hackman and Shelly Winters bloomers.  Who cares about the Titanic, give me the Poseidon every time.  We talked about it many moons ago on the show.  Here is a link.  https://www.mixcloud.com/substrateradio/sleep-in-cinema-episode-28-poseidon-adventure/

Available to stream on Amazon Prime

The Gold Rush (1925)

One of Charlie Chaplin’s best.  Muy girls always laughed uncontrollably at the bear scene when they were young.  There is a great New Year’s Eve party in the film as well that serves the narrative nicely.  Any Chaplin film is a delight, but this one holds a special place in our heart.

Available to stream on Amazon Prime, Kanopy, and Max

Craig’s Picks

Earth Mama (2023)

This one made my best of list for the year. Savannah Leaf’s story about a single mom trying to navigate life is powerful with a subtle, yet intense performance from Tia Nomore.

Steaming on Showtime and Paramount +, also available to rent on all platforms.

Poor Things (2023)

Go watch this at Sidewalk. Don’t bring the kids. It’s weird and amazing and Emma Stone is a revelation. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Steampunk Barbie with a twist of Frankenstein?  Oh there’s lots of sex, too. Don’t bring the kids. Or your parents.

Playing at Sidewalk this week
