Gareth’s Picks

A Girls Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)

Sensational debut film from Ana Lily Amirpour.  A mix of genres, shot in beautiful black and white, this confident story of a vampire in Iran is still powerful nearly a decade later. The music is cool and she rides a skateboard.  Enough said.

Available on Kanopy for free!

The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2017)

Another debut feature this time from Osgood Perkins, yes, the son of Anthony Perkins.  Here, he begins his mastery of ominous ambiance.  His aesthetic is about format but here he also has two strong performances from Emma Roberts and Lucy Boynton, who play students at a high school that has a great deal to hide and reveal.

Available on Kanopy for free!

Craig’s Picks

Antichrist (2009)

Lars von Trier doesn’t like you – he might hate you. Don’t watch this. I know this might seem like a cheeky endorsement but it’s actually a PSA about this movie. You will never look at scissors the same way again.

Available on Tubi if you are into that sort of thing

High Spirits (1988)

Darryl Hannah iand Peter O’Toole are ghosts in a haunted hotel. It also stars Steve Gutenberg, Beverly D’Angelo, Jennifer Tilly and Liam Neeson for some reason.

Oh man, Neil Jordan directed this after A Company of Wolves. The universe is telling me something…

Available to stream on Tubi

Happy Halloween! That’s all for spooky movies from me. It’s Hallmark Holiday films from here on out….
