Gareth’s Picks

Babette’s Feast (1987)

A masterpiece that never gets old.  A great film to watch around the holidays as we get together with family and friends and have a meal.  Gabriel Axel deftly presents the food and what it means to a person (Babette) and a community.

Available to stream on Kanopy

Marcel-The Shell With Shoes On (2021)

If you missed this delightful film when it played in the theaters, now is a great time to watch it.  Sweet and poignant, with humor, it delivers a heartfelt message.  The voice talent is incredible with Jenny Slate and Isabella Rossellini.

Running on Empty (1988)

Sidney Lumet’s drama about a family of Vietnam protestors that have been running from the government for so long they are now involving their children. Judd Hirsch and Christine Lahti are the parents and River Phoenix knocks it out of the park as the oldest son who is fed up with running. Martha Plimpton

is great as always. Worth the watch.

Available on Max

Dogfight (1991)

Another sleeper drama starring River Phoenix about a marine on the eve of shipping off to Vietnam. Also the day before JFK is assassinated. He connects with Rose, played by the incredible Lili Taylor. They are lovely together as two 18 year olds on the brink of the rest of their lives.

Available to stream on all platforms
