Gareth’s Picks

Mikey and Nicky (1976)

Elaine May’s fantastic film about two friends trying to survive a night in New York and each other.  It stars the always entertaining Peter Faulk and and astonishing performance by John Cassevetes.  Elaine May’s direction is note perfect.

Russian Ark (2002)

1 hour and 39 minutes.  One single shot.  It is an experiment in format but it also is an insightful walk through Russian history because that one shot is a tour of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg with actors recreating historic figures from the paintings that are shown. Alexandr Sokurov is the master behind the art.

Craig’s Picks

The Company of Wolves (1985)

Neil Jordan made many fine films before The Crying Game and Interview with the Vampire (oh my god was Tom Cruise miscast) and plenty of good films after…however The Company of Wolves from

1985 is an excellent retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with lots of gore. It’s a fantastic folk horror tale even though Jordan was mad when the studio marketed it as a horror movie. It’s got werewolves NEIL, it’s a horror movie. Also I just realized this is my second werewolf pick of the month behind Teen Wolf Too. I should really broaden my horror horizons.

Wolfen (1981)

Oh screw it, let’s talk about another werewolf movie. Wolfen takes itself very seriously as a crime thriller with a twist of werewolf. It stars an amazingly coiffed Albert Finney and Gregory Hines. I also just realized this is my second Albert Finney recommendation behind Looker. I am nothing if not predictable.

Available to rent on Apple TV.
